A selection of images of a long weekend in the Daintree area. while the reef sits a few miles off the coast the lush rainforest runs north/south adjacent to the reef , Parts of the Daintree are thought to be over 130 million years old covering some quarter of a million acres.
The rainforest is named after the Daintree River, which in turn was named in honour of the Australian geologist and photographer Richard Daintree (1832–1878). It is a remnant of what was once a vast forest that covered the entire Australian continent,
The flora of the Daintree contains an almost complete record of the evolution of plant life on Earth, including extremely ancient flowering plant families found nowhere else. Rainforests once covered much of eastern Australia, however, as conditions became drier the rainforest contracted and today the Daintree provides a refuge for many unique species
